It all started with Curtis and Nita Newton, Curtis was a Boy Scout Leader and would go to the Goodwill store and buy every trophy they had. He would give them out to his scouts for things they had done, a small and simple way to recognize them for their accomplishments. As he would give these "used" trophies out, the other leaders would ask him if he had any more. So Curtis started to go to other thrift stores and buy the used trophies. The Newtons set up a card table in the corner of the living room and called it Newton's Trophy Corner. As time went by and more and more people heard about the trophies, there became a high demand, so they built a shed in their backyard. Which turned into another shed. They would literally go to the parts house and buy one bolt, or two figures, whatever they needed to fill the order they had at the time. In 1982, Curtis had been on the Memphis Fire Department for 25 years and decided to retire as a Captain and moved the Trophy Shop to a storefront for the public at the location we have been at ever since. Curtis and Nita had thoughts that this business would be a "seasonal thing" and that they would be able to travel in the "off" season, so they hired their only employee at the time, their son, Jeff Newton. Little did they know that the card table in the corner would turn into the business that we have today.
Newton's Trophy Corner currently employs 4 generations of our family. The shop has employed over 40 of our family members throughout 48 years of business.
Nita Newton still comes to work in the Trophy Shop 6 days a week, and Curtis passed away in 1994 from cancer.
Their son, Jeff Newton, currently owns and manages the shop and is truly a blessing to so many members of the family. Jeff has done a great job carrying on the legacy started by his father, Curtis "Buddy" Newton.
Thank you for taking to the time to read our family's story!!
Curtis "Buddy" Newton, Founder and the one that made all of this possible.
